Pack 601’s Hiking Club: A Fun, Active Adventure That Builds Skills and Confidence

At Pack 601, getting outside and staying active isn’t just a goal—it’s a way of life. Their innovative hiking club has become a key strategy not only for fitness but also for building strong bonds, teaching leadership, and inspiring new recruits to join the adventure.

The Hiking Club: How It Works

Every new member of the hiking club starts their journey with a simple yet meaningful symbol: a leather cord adorned with a wooden slice, engraved with “Pack 601 Hiking Club.” As Scouts rack up miles on the trail, they earn colorful beads to thread onto their cord, marking their progress and achievements. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 5 miles: Yellow bead – Representing the warm heart that lifts weary feet.
  • 10 miles: Orange bead – Symbolizing the meek but powerful tiger, mindful of its strength.
  • 20 miles: White bead – Celebrating the cheerful snow lion, bounding from peak to peak.
  • 30 miles: Red bead – The outrageous garuda, soaring beyond limits.
  • 40 miles: Blue bead – The dragon, wise and one with the Universe.

When a Scout reaches 50 miles of cumulative hiking, they are awarded a prized engraved hiking stick, a badge of honor for their perseverance and dedication.

What’s the Hiking Experience Like?

The pack alternates between guided and unguided hikes, balancing structured learning with self-discovery. Whether it’s a 1-3 mile adventure close to home, like Fredrich Wilderness Park, or more challenging treks such as Enchanted Rock or Old Baldy, these outings are packed with excitement. Last year, the pack hiked a combined total of 142 miles!

Scouts are actively involved in tracking their mileage. A shared trifold board is proudly displayed at pack meetings, giving everyone a visual reminder of their achievements. The hikes are also logged digitally in Internet Advancement.

Leadership and Learning on the Trail

One of the unique elements of Pack 601’s hiking club is its focus on youth leadership. Each hike is led by two Scouts of any rank. The pathfinder is responsible for navigating the trail using a topographical map, often learning on the spot with guidance from leaders. The flagbearer carries tall windhorse flags, defining the front of the group and leading the way.

This hands-on leadership approach not only teaches map-reading skills but also instills confidence as Scouts make decisions about breaks, trail navigation, and ensuring the buddy system is followed. It’s all about being Scout-led and learning by doing.

Adults serve as safety guides, with one positioned at the back to ensure no one is left behind.

  1. Perfect Your Technique: The key to winning is to practice blowing hard in a small, concentrated area. Too much force can be counterproductive, making you lightheaded without effectively moving your boat. Focused, even breaths are your best bet!

Ready, Set, Recruit! How Your Unit Can Support Fall Recruitment

As the new school year approaches, the Alamo Area Council is excited to announce our comprehensive marketing plan to support fall recruitment efforts. This season, we’re rolling out TV and social media ads to bolster your grassroots campaigns and help bring new families into the Scouting community.

1. Update Your BeAScout Pin and Information

Your BeAScout pin acts as your storefront. Ensure it’s current and provides clear, direct information that anyone can understand. Highlight how your Chartered Organization supports both Cub Scout Packs and Scout Troops. For example:

“Scouting is a family activity, and our Pack is great for families with kids in elementary school, middle, and high school because our Troop meets the same night at the same place. Bring the entire family and discover the adventure together!”

Avoid Scouting jargon. Instead of terms like “scout-led” or “rank,” use universally understood concepts like “leadership building activities” and “awards and recognition for achievements.” Double-check that your contact information is accurate and respond promptly to inquiries. Quick replies can make a significant difference in keeping potential members interested. Instructions for updating your pin can be downloaded here.

2. Share Contact Information with the Council Office

After your recruiting events, send your contact information sheets to the council Membership Team at Growth@AlamoAreaBSA.org. We have tools to maintain contact with these individuals and support their journey into Scouting, making membership as seamless as possible.

3. Participate in Our Grassroots Media Campaign

Peer-to-peer recruitment is incredibly powerful. Share your positive Scouting experiences with your friends and invite them to see the benefits for their children. Even if they live out of the area, every kid deserves the chance to join Scouting. We have created a toolkit to help you spread the word to your circle. Download your copy here. 4. Attend a Unit Growth Workshop

Stay informed about the latest recruitment and retention strategies by attending a Unit Growth Workshop and Fall Membership Kickoff. These workshops provide valuable insights and practical tips to help your unit grow.

$48 Promotion

If you haven’t already heard about the $48 promotion, read this article for details. Our commercial ads will reference this limited offer in August, so be prepared! Because this is a limited offer, our commercials will change once the offer is exhausted.

Cub Scout Promotion

From August 1 to October 31, 2024, every new Cub Scout who registers online will receive a Welcome Kit. This kit includes a sticker for a water bottle, a Scout Life Mini Magazine, and a Peer-to-Peer Recruiting card. This card provides details on how to recruit a friend into Cub Scouts and earn a FREE Recruiter Strip Emblem at the Mussleman Scout Shop. TV commercials promoting this offer will run through the end of September, and social media advertising will continue through October to maximize this opportunity.

Recruiter Incentives

From August 1 to October 31, 2024, any Scout who recruits a friend into the Scouting program can earn a Recruiter Strip. Complete the information on the backside of the Peer-to-Peer Recruiting card and take it to the Musselman Scout Shop for immediate redemption.

Thank You to Our Dedicated Volunteers and Staff for a Memorable Summer Camp Season

The summer adventures of the 583 wouldn’t have been possible without the vision, dedication, and hard work of the staff of Cub Scout Day Camp, Camp Akela, and Bear Creek Summer Camp. Staffing camp can have its challenges, but these Scouts and Scouters remain flexible and believe in the mission of Scouting. These adults and youth are changing lives – that’s not an exaggeration. For some of their campers, it’s their first time away from home. For others, it’s the first time on the range. These are moments that campers will never forget…the very foundation that has made most of this year’s camp staff so eager to be counselors themselves.

Our volunteers and staff not only ensured the safety and enjoyment of our campers, but also served as role models, mentors, and friends. They taught essential skills, from knot-tying to archery, and instilled values of teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. Their enthusiasm and dedication were evident in every activity, campfire story, and badge earned.

A special thank you goes to our camp directors, program leaders, and support teams. Your behind-the-scenes efforts made everything run smoothly, allowing our Scouts to focus on having fun and learning. Your commitment to excellence is the backbone of our success.

We also want to acknowledge the families of our volunteers and staff. Your support and understanding allowed your loved ones to devote their time and energy to Scouting, creating unforgettable experiences for countless young people.

As we look back on this summer, we are filled with gratitude and pride. The positive impact of your hard work will resonate for years to come. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to the Boy Scouts of America and for making this summer an extraordinary adventure for all.
