Under this roof, a Scout becomes a leader.
The Mabee Program Valley is where scouts at Bear Creek Scout Camp spend their summer days. Help us raise four new shelters over their heads, cool by day and lit into the evening, so the Texas sun never cuts a program short.
The Program Valley is the busiest ground at Bear Creek Scout Camp from June through August. It is where a first-year Scout nocks an arrow, a den finishes its first project, and a patrol cooks its first meal in the open air. It is where young people learn what they are capable of.
It is also the most exposed spot on the property. The Hill Country sun does not keep Scout hours. On a July afternoon, an unshaded program area can climb well past a safe working temperature, and our leaders are forced to shorten sessions or move them inside. Shade here is not a comfort. It is what keeps a full day of program safe and outdoors, where Scouting belongs.
The plan for Program Valley
We are building four new open-air shelters, each 20 by 40 feet, for more than 3,200 square feet of covered program space. They are engineered steel, built for Hill Country wind and roofed to last through decades of Texas summers, and open on every side so the breeze moves right through.
Each shelter will also be wired and plumbed. Misting systems and fans will keep Scouts cool and safe through the hottest hours, and lights will let program run past sundown, so evening meals, ceremonies, and night activities can all happen under cover. A bare shade roof cannot do any of that.
What your gift builds
Our goal is $30,000. That is enough to raise all four shelters and bring water and power to each, with misters, fans, and lights included. Because the steel arrives as a kit and volunteers provide much of the labor, most of every dollar goes straight into the shelters. Every gift moves the project forward.
Four shelters, four names
Each of the four shelters can carry a name. It might be a family’s, a mentor’s, a unit’s, or someone whose Scouting story you want to honor. That name stands in Program Valley, in front of every Scout who passes through, for a generation. We would be glad to talk it through with you.
Why it matters
Every project built and every meal cooked in Program Valley is practice for something larger. It is a young person learning to make the right choice when it counts. That is the promise of the Scout Oath and Law, and it is the reason Bear Creek Scout Camp exists: to send home responsible, participating citizens and capable leaders. These four shelters are where that work happens. Please help us keep it going.
