Scout Troop 233 is an Award-Winning Troop for both BOYS & GIRLS, located in Northwest San Antonio (Leon Springs), Texas, about 3 miles outside Loop 1604 and the Rim. We are an active & high adventure Troop, and we have found this to be an important part of scouting program to maintaining a strong and healthy Troop! Scouting is a program for our youth to have fun, learn and practice leadership, discover life skills, develop citizen patriots, and to make friendships. We meet every Monday 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Lutheran High School of San Antonio, 18104 Babcock Rd, San Antonio, TX 78255.
To do High Adventure we have to get scouts outdoors! Our Troop tends to camp almost every month where we will do a different activities like kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, climbing, rappelling, water skiing, knee boarding, tubing, ziplining, shooting sports, canoeing, swimming, orienteering, geocaching, wilderness survival, and more. The only time we do not camp is major holiday breaks and after summer camps due to the heat. We try to do a minimum of one or two regular summer camps and one or two high adventure summer camps each year. Our goal is to remain flexible and offer various scenarios of hiking and water-type activities for the summer high adventure such as Philmont, Northern Tier, Florida SeaBase, and others.
Our Troop tries to focus on rank advancement and earning merit badges to keep scouts progressing in their scouting careers. We recommend that Scouts wear the uniform proudly at all meetings, when traveling to and from campouts, and at all ceremonies. However, we also understand that if they have been doing sports or other activities such as band before a meeting night that driving back home just to change into a uniform may not be practical. We would rather have them make a meeting on time instead of late or not at all just to get in uniform.
There is an annual membership registration fee that goes directly to Scouts BSA when you register. Our Troop has also elected to collect annual dues for each Scout as well and the timing can be coordinated with our treasurer. The dues are collectively used for the replacement of new Troop gear and Troop annual operation costs such as insurance and supplies. Alternatively, scouts can do fundraising during the year to earn enough money to not only offset or fully pay for dues but also the cost of outings, camps, and adventure bases. Scouting activities that require money during the year will be done on a “pay as you go” basis for activities. For example, if the Troop does an activity such as kayaking and your scout goes on this event then they would be responsible for the cost to rent the kayak they use. If they have money in their account from fundraising, then they can use that to apply to that kayak activity or save for other activities like summer camp.
